Trees can offer a beautiful addition to any yard or garden. They provide shade, clean the air, and prevent erosion. Unfortunately, there are some circumstances where the best course of action is to have them removed. Some of these situations include:
- Diseased or infested with wood boring insects
- Posing a threat to yours or your neighbours property
- Decaying or dead tree
There are several private tree by-laws in place to govern the removal of trees on your property. If your tree has a diameter of 30 cm or greater at Breast Height (DBH) you must have permission from the city to remove it. DBH refers to the tree's diameter measured 1.4 meters above the ground and is the standard for measuring trees. Tree removal permit applications must include an Arborist report and in some cases a replanting plan. If a permit is not issued before the removal of a tree, the city may fine you for removal of a tree greater than 30 cm DBH. There must be an easier way, right?
